WRITER/CREATIVE DIRECTOR

My approach to web design

While I often provide copy and content strategy for existing websites and interactive multimedia, I’m working on an increasing number of websites where I’m executing and/or directing both copy and design.

The biggest problem most of my clients run into is that they’ve gone to a web design firm, or a designer, to build their website before getting their brand, content and overall communications strategy properly defined and organized. (That’s where a hyphenate writer-designer-creative director like me comes in.)

I typically approach sites from a content perspective first, then work on logos and page designs that reflect the client, brand or offering. I tend to offer one approach that I think will work best, and of course provide opportunity for feedback and taking an alternate route. But honestly, the alternate route rarely happens.

I think the reason clients are happy with my websites is because I think of myself as a communications professional, as opposed to a reactive, production-oriented “web designer.” The bottom line is that all the coding and backend technical stuff is not the hard part—it’s communicating your message, brand and offering with clarity, economy, and in an attractive way that will appeal to your target audience.

My clients tend to be satisfied because they pay a reasonable price for a fully functional website that looks cool and says what they want to say in a way that will resonate with, and not intimidate, their visitors. I like to work quickly, without bogging clients down with a lot of unnecessary process and over-billed "exploration." Email me with your needs and budget, and we can take it from there.

Author Nancy Bilyeau

Nancy needed a website to promote the launch of her upcoming first novel, The Crown, which will be published by Simon & Schuster/Touchstone in early 2011. I recommended a simple navigation with all the necessary ingredients, edited her content from her press materials, and retouched her photos to evoke the drama and intrigue of her Tudor-era religious thriller. Dr. Kirsten Schulz, clinical psychologist

Kirsten needed a website to attract clients to her new practice based in San Francisco. To help forge an immediate connection with visitors, I shot a photo of Kirsten, retouched it and recommended featuring it on her homepage. I then worked with her on her content strategy and and edited her copy before building the site, which features easy navigation of her specialties, impressive credentials and unique approach. I also helped Kirsten with search engine optimization (SEO). She got calls soon after the site launched, and we’ll be working together on other marketing and PR initiatives in the future. Wren Capital

Wren is a boutique, alternative asset placement agency that asked for a clean, simple, sophisticated presentation that reflects their high net-worth investors, alternative asset managers and clients. I worked closely with Wren’s founder and managing partner to design a logo, color palette and content structure that reflected the firm’s minimalist, modern sensibilities while presenting enough detail to attract new investors.
